How does Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator, which means a form of botulinum toxin type A. It is injected into targeted treatment areas using an ultra-fine needle and works by blocking the nerve signals needed for facial muscles to contract. Facial lines and wrinkles are a result of the repetitious contraction of facial muscles to make expressions. After injection, the neuromodulator relaxes the muscles and limits their movement, reducing the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area. Results appear gradually over 3-7 days following injection.

What areas of the face can be treated with Botox work?

Botox can be used to address lines and wrinkles on a number of different facial areas, including the forehead, eye area (also known as crow’s feet), and lip lines. Botox can also be injected into the muscles of the jaw for a slimming effect or to help alleviate pain from teeth grinding or TMJ.

What does a Botox treatment feel like?

Botox treatments require no anesthesia or recovery time, and discomfort is minimal. Some patients report brief discomfort during the injection, which fades after the procedure. The treatment is very quick: many people get Botox during their lunch hours and return to work.

Should I do anything to prepare for Botox treatment?

We advise patients to avoid alcohol, as well as medications or supplements that thin the blood, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, ginkgo biloba, or ginseng, to help minimize bruising after the procedure.

Are there any side effects of Botox treatment?

Side effects may include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection site. These will resolve without intervention after a few days to a week.

When will I see the results?

Generally, effects are seen 3-5 days after the treatment. This varies by patient, and it may take as long as two weeks to see treatment results.

How long do the results of Botox last?

The effects of Botox treatment typically last between 3-5 months from the date of injection. Over time, the body will metabolize the Botox, which results in the gradual return of muscle movement in the treatment area. Botox results can be maintained for longer periods by undergoing follow-up maintenance treatments every 3-4 months.

When should a person start getting Botox?

There is no right, wrong, or perfect age to start using Botox. Clients should be evaluated by Medical Aestheticians of Oklahoma prior to treatment. Some clients choose to begin using Botox to treat existing lines and wrinkles. Others may choose to begin treatment in their twenties as a preventative measure.

Is Botox safe?

Yes. Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for reversing lines and wrinkles. However, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological diseases should not receive Botox treatments.
